From the Minerva Bello Center for the Rights of Victims of Violence, we strongly condemn the incursion of heavily armed state police into the facilities of the Rural Teachers' College of Atequiza, Jalisco, which occurred this afternoon. This act represents a serious violation of human rights and established protocols for the use of force, in addition to threatening the integrity and security of the student community.
The reported facts indicate that the police entered in a violent and disproportionate manner, using excessive force against male and female students who were in a state of total defenselessness. No evidence has been presented that there was a valid court order or a well-founded suspicion that justified such a display of violence.
This type of action not only violates the fundamental rights of students, but also generates a climate of intimidation and repression that is unacceptable in a state of law. Rural teacher training schools are spaces for training and fighting for public education, and any act of violence against them must be investigated and punished with the full weight of the law.
We demand:
1. An immediate, transparent and impartial investigation by the competent authorities to determine the responsibilities of those who ordered and carried out this incursion.
2. The guarantee that acts of violence against educational institutions and their communities will not be repeated.
3. Unrestricted respect for the human rights of students and the protection of their physical and emotional integrity.
4. Accountability by state authorities and reparation for the damage caused to the community of the Atequiza Rural Teacher Training School.
We call on civil society, human rights organizations and the international community to be vigilant and show solidarity with the struggle of the teachers, who have historically defended the right to education and a dignified life.
No more violence against rural teachers!
Justice and respect for the students of Atequiza!
